Southampton surrendered a late lead at Sincil Bank after head coach Tonda Eckert made defensive substitutions during a physical Championship encounter against Lincoln City.
Welington opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a stunning long-range strike. The visitors controlled much of the second period before Mikkel Ladefoged secured a late equaliser.
Defending The Late Tactical Changes
Eckert replaced midfielder Kuryu Matsuki with central defender Nathan Wood in the 84th minute to handle direct aerial pressure. Supporters have voiced growing frustration over this tendency to invite pressure late in matches rather than retaining possession. Eckert defended the move, suggesting his side struggled to control the ball.
“The reality is that if it stays a one-goal game, you know it’s going to get tough towards the end. We need to find a way to grind these games out.”
Critics continue to ask Why Tonda Eckert’s late tactical change failed to contain the hosts. The head coach insisted his defensive shifts were necessary against an opponent pumping long balls forward.
“Of course, we need to do better with the balls that come in. Again, credit to Lincoln; I think they had outstanding physicality, but it’s for us to deal with.”
Southampton return to St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday to face Swansea City. Fans hope to see James Ward-Prowse set for full return as Tonda prepares his side for another physical test.
