The Saints had secured a windfall in the region of £30 million from Aston Villa following the sale of Danny Ings as the ex-Liverpool striker entered the final year of his Saints deal.
The Saints have moved swiftly in accordance with the sale, having agreed a deal in the region of £15 million for Armstrong.
The home-grown ex-Newcastle striker, who is also adept on either wing, was the second-highest scorer (28) in the Championship last season behind Ivan Toney of Brentford (33) – who similarly once featured on the books at Newcastle.
Southampton have already signed Chelsea youngsters Dynel Simeu and Tino Livramento, as well as former Stade Brestois star Romain Perraud.
In terms of competitors, Sky Sports [via BBC] had reported that Crystal Palace were leading the race for Armstrong but the Eagles were reportedly unwilling to strike a deal closer to the valuation of Blackburn’s opener.

Southampton have secured a proven finisher that boasts youth and versatility.
Fans will have to hope that Armstrong can fill the void left by Ings’ departure in talismanic style – else the club could risk impotency up front, given Ings’ proportionately remarkable impact in terms of the team’s overall goals last season.
