Southampton keeping tabs on Celtic’s Jeremie Frimpong

Southampton are thought to be monitoring Celtic teenager Jeremie Frimpong ahead of the January window.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who claim that the Saints and several Championship sides are tracking the former Manchester City man.

The report added that the Scottish champions have held discussions over a new contract, but no agreement has been reached as of yet.

Frimpong’s current Celtic Park deal runs until 2023 after they landed him on a permanent basis from Manchester City last year for a mere £342,000.

The Athletic recently claimed that Ralph Hasenhuttl wants another full-back in the winter window, with Manchester United’s Brandon Williams linked with a St Mary’s switch.

Frimpong would fall into the full-back category, with most of the 19-year-old’s 21 appearances this season coming at right-back or in a roving wing-back role. [Transfermarkt]

The youngster can also play higher up the pitch in an attacking role and his versatility could be something which may appeal to Hasenhuttl.

He was hailed as a ‘dangerous weapon‘ by Riga manager Mihails Konevs earlier this season, with the youngster coming off the bench to set up Celtic’s winner against the Latvian outfit in the Europa League qualifiers.

Frimpong currently has a £2.7m Transfermarkt valuation, but with Manchester City having a 30% sell-on fee, Celtic may want an offer significantly higher than that amount to part ways with the player in the winter window.
