Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Danny Ings over the summer.
Spurs reportedly made an approach for The Saints star during the recent transfer window.
However, the 28-year-old remained with Southampton past the deadline.
Fresh reports from Football Insider have now claimed that Southampton actually turned down a “sizeable” bid for the striker from Jose Mourinho’s side in the recent window.
Southampton have now opened talks with Ings over a new contract, and Football Insider claim Spurs’ summer pursuit of the forward has been a key reason why Saints officials have acted.
Ings, who netted 22 Premier League goals last year, is currently under contract with The Saints until 2022.

The intent of Saints officials looking to extend Ings’ deal past 2022 is brilliant.
The forward has scored 37 times in 74 appearances for the club, and his form over the last 12 months, to us, earned him the right to improve his reported £75,000-a-week salary.
Tottenham’s failed move for Ings over the summer may turn out to be a good thing in the long run, should the player put pen to paper over new terms.
