Southampton are thought to be plotting a move for Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Toby Savin.
The Saints have reportedly been keeping tabs on the teenager, who has been a regular under John Coleman this season.
The 19-year-old has made 12 senior appearances in total, keeping four clean sheets during that time – an impressive clean sheet percentage of 33%.
However, a potential deal for Savin, we feel, could spell trouble for current Saints shot-stopper, Angus Gunn.
The 24-year-old, who reportedly earns £40,000-a-week, was sent out on loan to Stoke City on deadline day.
Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster are clearly ahead of Gunn in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s goalkeeping pecking order.
Recent reports have suggested that Southampton are willing to loan the player out to Stoke again next season, should he impress during the current campaign.
There will be a time over the coming years, though, where McCarthy and Forster are no longer required on the south coast.
To us, it appeared as if Gunn, who joined the club back in 2018 from Manchester City in a deal worth £13.5million, would be the natural successor.
However, with the links to Savin, who has already been in the England goalkeeping set up at St George’s Park, Gunn may not have a long-term future at St Mary’s.
His current stint in the Championship, to us, is crucial regarding his Saints career.
Should he fail to impress over the coming months, the club may well be open to fast-tracking a deal for Savin, who, in time, could leapfrog Gunn on the south coast.
