Can Southampton finish higher than sixth, the highest it’s finished in the Premier League since returning to the top flight in 2012-13?
The Saints haven’t started the season well and are languishing in 13th position with the EPL about to resume following last weekend’s international break. But there is cause for Southampton fans to be optimistic: the bookmakers rate the club higher than its current ladder position and expect the club to finish mid-table and possibly higher.
Of course, there are plenty of cases of teams defying the betting odds. But betting markets are a good indicator of a club’s chances because prices change based on where the money is going. Think of it as like crowdsourcing for football predictions.
What are Southampton’s chances of finishing in the top half, top 6, top 4, or winning the premiership? Read on for our full guide to Southampton’s Premier League betting odds.
Best Southampton Bet: 3.25 to Finish in Top Half
Judging by the latest betting odds, the bookmakers and fans have a high regard for Southampton. The Saints are on the 11th line in Betway Sports’ betting market for a top 10 finish, and are paying 3.25. Eight teams appear virtual locks for the top half. Manchester City and Liverpool are such strong certainties that the bookies aren’t even taking bets on them. Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea are all paying 1.01 to 1.05. Two other teams – Everton and Leicester City –
are paying 1.25. That leaves potentially two spots up for grabs and 12 teams to fight for them. Wolves and West Ham lead Southampton in the odds, with nine other teams trailing behind the Saints.
What about that top-six finish we discussed earlier? Southampton is currently paying 21.00 odds to match its best ever finish in the Premier League era.
Southampton a 1500/1 Chance to Win the Premier League
Most Saints fans are realistic enough to know that this won’t be the year the club wins the Premier League. Nonetheless, we couldn’t talk about Southampton’s odds without discussing the title. Interestingly, Southampton is further back in the pecking order for the title than for the top 10 – and only Burnley, Norwich City, and Sheffield United have worse odds.
According to the latest Betway odds, Southampton is paying 1,500/1 to win the 2019-20 Premier League title. That makes the Saints more than three times more likely to win the Premier League than Leicester were in 2015-16 when they won it from unbelievable 5,000/1 odds. Nonetheless, Southampton has already fallen 8 points behind league leader Liverpool and the 1,500/1 odds reflect the extreme difficulty in coming back from there.
Southampton 6.50 to be Relegated
The good news – or bad news if you’re a glass half-empty sort of person – is that Southampton is paying 6.50 to be relegated. Being given a 6-7 in one chance to be relegated isn’t great, but the truth is there are nine teams considered more likely to be relegated. If the bookies are right, then Southampton will qualify for an impressive ninth consecutive season in the Premier League next year.
Southampton is considered the least likely of the three South Coast teams to be relegated this season. AFC Bournemouth is paying 4.50 to drop down to The Championship and Brighton & Hove Albion is paying 3.25. The only teams equally or more likely than Brighton to drop down a division are: Watford and Burnley, both 3.25, Aston Villa, 2.75, Newcastle United, 2.50, and Sheffield United, 2.25
