Lemina: Saints players are still behind Hughes
Southampton’s first-team squad are still backing Mark Hughes despite the club’s torrid start to the new Premier League season, Mario Lemina has claimed.
Speaking to Sky Sports following Southampton’s 6-1 defeat away at Manchester City on Sunday, Gabon international Lemina stated that the entire squad ‘trust in him and believe in him’.
Hughes’ future at St Mary’s has come into question in recent weeks, with the club languishing in 16th place on the Premier League table and just two points above bottom-placed Fulham.
The Saints have won only one Premier League fixture this season and have netted one goal in their last six outings.
This has led to claims that Hughes could be sacked if Southampton fail to secure a win against Watford at the weekend, with available managers such as Sam Allardyce and David Moyes linked with the hot-seat at St Mary’s.
Lemina, however, insisted that the Southampton players have total faith in Hughes as they look to turn around their difficult start to the campaign. The 25-year-old said:
We are all behind him. All of the players trust in him and believe in him. This kind of game cannot affect us because we are strong as a team. Now we have to win games to change the opinion of the fans, everyone.
We have to come back because we don’t deserve to be in this place in the table because we had some good games.
