Saints set for a historical January

We’re now a few days into January, and the transfer window is open.

The month promises to be historical for the club as multiple aspects could created a very exciting and memorable second half of the 2016/17 campaign.

As all Saints fans will know, the team have struggled to put a ball in the back of a net, being one of the lowest ranked sides in goals scored so far this season.

It has been well documented by the media and fans that during the transfer window a striker should be Southampton’s number one priority, especially with top-scorer Charlie Austin being ruled out until around March.

Players as talented as Daniel Sturridge have been linked with the Premier League side as the English striker has suffered from the wrath of Jurgen Klopp and has found game time at Anfield very rare.

Firstly, this could make for a big month. Saints could look towards a marquee signing to get them back into the swing of things this season.

Secondly, Southampton will have played four games in the Premier League in January, all possibly proving pivotal to their season. Saints will need to look to keep the pressure on the top six as they seek European qualification for the third consecutive season.

The tie is played across two-legs and at the end is a prize that comes every blue moon for Southampton; a trip to Wembley in a major cup final. Saints have been very impressive in the competition, most notably beating Arsenal 2-0 in their own back-yard. They still are yet to concede in the competition, boosting their hopes of getting a positive result.

Being in the semi-final alone is a rare achievement for Southampton and should be savoured, but recent results in the league against Liverpool have been positive, being unbeaten against The Reds in three Premier League games.

Reaching Wembley and the final will be miraculous and we will find out if Claude Puel can do what plenty of recent Saints managers have failed to do in his first season this month.

Whatever happens, history is guaranteed to be made, making January a very exciting and highly anticipated month!
