A number of Southampton fans have bemoaned the performance of Jan Bednarek during the Saints’ 3-0 defeat at Leeds United on Tuesday evening as their worrying form continued.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side went into the game aiming to get back to winning ways after going seven matches without a win in the league. However, despite having the better of the first half in which they had a penalty overturned by VAR and Che Adams’ goal ruled out from a quickly-taken free kick, it was a concerning second half collapse which saw them well beaten in the end.
Bednarek was again asked to play out of position at right-back in the absence of Kyle Walker-Peters, and he endured a torrid evening, especially in the second half as Raphinha caused him a whole host of trouble. The 24-year-old needed a lot more support down the right-hand side as he looked lost at times going forwards and trying to defend.
The defender was also a little wayward in his passing at times, with Bednarek giving the ball away on nine occasions (Sofascore). It was a performance which suggests that Hasenhuttl might need to once again rethink the right-back problem and potentially consider switching to a back three to avoid similar woes in the future.
Southampton fans frustrated by Bednarek’s deployment
Some Southampton fans didn’t want to solely blame Bednarek for his struggles and were just as angry, if not more so, about the lack of help he was given and how unsuited he is to playing at right-back..
