Southampton managed to make one addition to their squad on transfer deadline day with Takumi Minamino arriving on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season.
It proved to be another hectic last few hours in the transfer market for the Saints, who were aiming to bring in some defensive reinforcements to their squad, but they failed in their attempts to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Japhet Tanganga. There was also a late effort to take Neco Williams on loan from Liverpool but that was rebuffed by the Premier League champions.
The Saints allowed Shane Long to depart on loan to Championship side Bournemouth, while Yan Valery was allowed to join Birmingham City despite Southampton’s lack of full-back options. The late announcement of the Minamino signing did somewhat ease the pressures on squad depth but not in the areas where it was needed the most.
Ralph Hasenhuttl attempted to get Liverpool to agree to an option to buy as part of the loan deal, but that was turned down by the Reds, who still view him as having a future at Anfield. It will now be up to the 26-year-old to impress Klopp with his performances at St Mary’s during the rest of the campaign.
