Southampton should be impressed with Elyounoussi’s recent form

Southampton man Mohamed Elyounoussi has been starring for Celtic in recent weeks.

The Norwegian, who made the move to Celtic Park for a second loan stint over the summer, has been in fine form for Neil Lennon’s side in recent weeks.

He netted his fourth goal in as many games on the weekend, helping The Hoops into the final of the Scottish Cup final in the process.

The versatile forward put in a man of the match display just three days earlier in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Lille.

Elyounoussi netted both goals in France, ending with an eye-catching WhoScoreed rating of 9.33.

Reports last month suggested that The Saints still believe the Norway international is capable of making his mark in the Premier League at St Mary’s.

And if Elyounoussi carries on his impressive recent performances up in Scotland, it will only help his chances of featuring in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans for the 2021/22 season.

One man who he may be rivalling next year is Theo Walcott.

The 31-year-old, who is out of contract with Everton next summer, recently hinted that he would be interested in remaining on the south coast on a long-term basis.

However, we feel that, as of now, it could make sense for the club to place their trust in Elyounoussi instead of making Walcott’s move permanent.

Elyounoussi’s deal with The Saints runs until 2023, and if given the nod by Hasenhuttl, could join the likes of Nathan Redmond, Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo in battling for wide spots on the south coast.
