Manchester United landed Luke Shaw from Southampton back in 2014.
A deal for the left-back has reached a whopping £33.75m in total, with Shaw turning out 147 times for the Red Devils during his time at Old Trafford.
Then under the management of Ronald Koeman, Southampton brought in Ryan Bertrand on loan from Chelsea to fill the left-sided gap vacated by Shaw.
The Saints made a permanent move for Bertrand less than a year later, with the deal costing £11.97m.
Bertrand has been a regular figure at St Mary’s since then and has racked up 214 appearances on the south coast.
Not only have The Saints made a huge £21.78m profit regarding the two players; on the whole, they’ve also had the better of the deal over the last six years.
Bertrand has been a more reliable figure, making 67 more appearances than Shaw in that time. In terms of Premier League outings, Bertrand has 192 with the Saints, almost twice as many as Shaw’s 102 top-flight appearances for United.
Bertrand’s player performance figures are quite similar to Shaw’s. Since the 2014/15 season, the Saints man has recorded a better season WhoScored average than Shaw in three campaigns.
Bertrand has averaged more interceptions and crosses and conceded fewer fouls in the majority of those seasons.
Shaw has failed to cement his place in United’s side under numerous managers, while also suffering 10 different injuries at Old Trafford – Bertrand has had just five such issues on the south coast.
Overall, when Saints officials look back on Bertrand’s time at St Mary’s, they’ll be more than pleased with the impact he made with the club, especially in regards to replacing Shaw, who was one of the world’s most expensive teenagers at the time.
