Jannick Vestergaard is Southampton’s club-record signing and is living up to the billing this season at St Mary’s.
The towering central defender arrived at the club in July 2018 from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, in a deal which has reportedly now totalled £22.5million.
Although the club paid over double Vestergaard’s current £10.8million valuation two years ago, it’s proven to be another excellent piece of business by Saints officials.
The 28-year-old started his first game of the season in The Saints’ 1-0 win over Burnley and has been an ever-present figure at the back since then.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are unbeaten since the win at Turf Moor at the end of September, conceding just three goals in 360 minutes of action.
That’s been largely down to the commanding displays of Vestergaard, who according to WhoScored, has been the club’s best player this season.
The Denmark international is out in front with a 7.31 average rating, pipping star striker Danny Ings by a rating of 0.03.
WhoScored show that the defender is in the best form of his Saints career and is averaging more passes this season, with his pass success percentage also the highest it’s been at St Mary’s.
His towering presence and calmness on the ball have been vital in recent weeks, and his season form may play a big part in where the club ends up at the end of the season.
