Southampton could live to regret January decision on Che Adams as Paul Robinson has revealed Leeds’ summer stance on the forward.
Robinson, who began his career at Leeds, says that the club are unlikely to pursue a deal for Adams this summer if they are promoted to the Premier League.
He claims that Leeds would have a bigger budget and would be looking at a different calibre of player to Adams.
Speaking to MOTLeedsNews, Robinson said:
Leeds were looking for a proven Championship goalscorer and Che Adams was perfect for this division, but I really don’t know if they’d go back for him now.
If Leeds get promoted then the budget will be bigger and Leeds will be looking for a different sort of player – as opposed to a player who can’t get in another Premier League side.
I think Leeds will be looking at a completely different calibre of player if they go up – as all teams do when they get promoted.
With Robinson making it appear as though Leeds will not try to sign Adams ahead of next season, Southampton could end up wishing they cashed in on him in January.
Leeds were reportedly ready to pay £19m to sign Adams, which would have been a profit for the Saints after they signed him from Birmingham City for £15m last summer.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though, as I commended Southampton’s decision to keep Adams in January. At the time, it looked as though Ralph Hasenhuttl could offer Adams more game time in the second half of the season in order to prove himself and become a regular in the team.
However, this has not been the case and Adams has not played more than 20 minutes in a Premier League game since December. He has not been able to break into the team and he was even left out of the matchday squad entirely in the defeat to West Ham last month.
I feel that the Saints could regret not cashing in on him for a profit whilst they still could, as Hasenhuttl appears to not be seeing enough from him at the moment to put him in the team.
