Southampton signing Omar Elabdellaoui from Olympiacos this summer could be bad news for Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters.
Greek outlet SDNA report that Southampton are one of a number of clubs keen on signing the Norweigan international, along with Burnley and Leicester.
What could the signing of Elabdellaoui mean for Southampton’s squad going forward, though?
If Southampton sign Elabdellaoui it could mean that Walker-Peters ends up in limbo in the summer. He joined Southampton on loan from Tottenham in January due to a lack of game time, but could now miss out on a permanent move to St. Mary’s this summer if Elabdellaoui joins.
Southampton would have Yan Valery, Walker-Peters and Elabdellaoui if they signed both players. This is far too much depth in one specific position for a team that are not likely to be playing European football. Having three players who can only play at fullback, in the squad could lead to issues in the dressing room – with one or two of them potentially becoming unsettled if they are left out on a regular basis.
This is why Saints need to decide between signing Elabdellaoui or Walker-Peters. If they pick Elabdellaoui, Walker-Peters could need to find a new club in the summer unless Jose Mourinho changes his mind and decides to give the youngster another chance at Spurs next season.
