Southampton centre-back Wesley Hoedt has admitted that he would be open to the idea of returning back to his home country next season and it highlights why the club must cash in on him this summer.
Hoedt is currently out on loan to Antwerp in Belgium, but when asked about a move back to the Netherlands he said that he would think about it.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Hoedt said:
It is not an absolute must.
This also has to do with the many artificial pitches, which I do not find attractive but if a top Dutch club enquire, I would certainly think about it.
Hoedt’s comments suggest that he has already given up on his time at Southampton, openly admitting that he would think about joining another club whilst already out on loan. Ralph Hasenhuttl allowed him to leave on loan last summer, but it remains to be seen whether he has any plans for the Dutchman in the future.
If he does, that could soon change with these comments from Hoedt. Southampton need players who are committed to the cause and ready to fight for their place, with Hoedt seeming like he has already given up before the fight has even started.
This is not the attitude Southampton should be looking for from their players and this is why the club should look to sell him on a permanent basis in the next transfer window.
Southampton already have Jack Stephens, Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek at the club and could look to sign another centre-back in the summer rather than bringing Hoedt back into the fold. If they are able to sell Hoedt, the money from his departure could fund the signing of another defender to strengthen the squad.
