Southampton are right to want to sell Jannik Vestergaard after it has been revealed that he wanted to leave the club in January.
According to The Mirror, Jannik Vestergaard wanted to leave Southampton in the January transfer window and sign for fellow Premier League side Leicester.
The report claims that he was keen on the move but Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl rejected his attempts to complete a deal. Hasenhuttl wanted to keep Vestergaard as an option in his squad during the second half of the campaign.
Football Insider have now reported that Southampton are open to offers for Vestergaard, who earns a reported £60,000 a week, heading into the summer transfer window.
This is the right call for Southampton to make after Vestergaard’s intentions have been made clear. Vestergaard is seemingly unhappy with the role he is playing at Southampton and wants to leave the club, so allowing him to move on could solve a potential problem in the dressing room.
If Vestergaard is kicking up a fuss in training or in the dressing room because of his lack of game time, it could damage the unity of the group and the spirit heading into games. This means that letting him join another club could help to improve the team togetherness, especially if they are able to replace him with a hungry, young, centre-back who is ready to compete.
There seems to be little point in keeping a player who does not want to be at the club. If Southampton want to progress as a club then they could need all of their players to be pulling in the right direction and striving to improve.
