Southampton are reportedly looking to sell defender Jannik Vestergaard this summer and are looking for a fee in the region of £20m, which could be a great piece of business from the club.
According to Football Insider, Southampton want to move the Danish international on at the end of the season and will accept offers of around £20m for his services.
The Saints are making the right call by allowing Vestergaard to leave in the summer and cashing in on him for a good price. For £20m, Southampton would be making a profit on a player who is not a regular starter in the Premier League and that would be good business by the club. This is after they signed him from Borussia Monchengladbach for £18m in the summer of 2018.
Vestergaard, who is one of the club’s top earners, has only started 13 Premier League games for Southampton this season and has been behind Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek for the majority of the campaign. Ralph Hasenhuttl showed faith in Vestergaard at the start of the season, with 11 starts in the first 12 games, but has now phased him out of the side and stuck with Bednarek and Stephens.
This shows that Vestergaard may not have a big role in Hasenhuttl’s plans and selling him could allow the club to replace him. Southampton could go and sign a younger centre-back who can challenge Bednarek and Stephens, whilst also develop and learn from them over the course of the season, with Vestergaard currently being the oldest of the three.
So, all in all, Southampton selling Vestergaard could allow them to make a profit off the pitch and invest in quality on it. This is why a deal makes sense heading into next season.
