Can Southampton secure a top ten Premier League finish?

If there is one word that describes Southampton’s performance this season, it is “inconsistency”. The Saints have had some memorable and superb winning runs in the 2019/2020 season, but they have also had long losing streaks. So, do they have a chance of securing a top ten Premier League finish? It looks doubtful, but that does not mean it is impossible.

An Overview of Southampton’s Premier League Season

Earlier in the season, the Saints were in the midst of a relegation fight before they managed a remarkable turnaround to shoot up the Premier League table after winning four out of five games in December and January. At that point, it looked likely that Southampton could achieve a mid-table or higher finish. However, Southampton has picked up only three points since February.

Southampton’s chances of reaching the top ten became further out of reach after the team was defeated at home by Newcastle on 7th March. The Magpies’ Allan Saint-Maximin scored the only goal of the match in the closing stages to put the team eight points clear of relegation, with nine more games to go. The game saw Southampton’s team reduced to 10 men halfway through the first half after Moussa Djnepro received a red card for fouling Isaac Hayden. Although McCarthy made a stunning triple save in the first half, it was not to be Saints’ match.

Do you have what it takes to manage a squad and make it to victory? You can find out by playing games like FA Premier League Stars, in which you can control players’ on and off-pitch development. A Look at the Stats

Saints have 34 points at present, which is five points behind Crystal Palace, in 11th place, and Burnley FC in 10th place. So, Southampton is a little shy of having enough points to make the top ten. Although there is quite a steep drop in points between Southampton in 14th place and Brighton in 15th place. Brighton currently has just 29 points. Meanwhile, the top five of the table looks like this:

· Liverpool: 82 points.

· Manchester City: 57 points.

· Leicester City: 50 points.

· Chelsea: 48 points.

· Manchester United: 45 points.

Out of the last five games played, Southampton has only won one; when they beat Aston Villa 2-0 on 22nd February at home. Throughout the Premier League season, Saints have played 29 matches. They have won 10, lost 15, and drawn 4.

Danny Ings has undoubtedly been the player most responsible for Southampton’s wins in the Premier League this season. Out of 23 appearances, the forward has scored an impressive 15 goals. Second to Ing for goal-scoring capability is midfielder James Ward-Prowse, although he has only scored four goals in 29 appearances.

Upcoming Matches

Where Southampton will end up finishing in the Premier League table comes down to how well the team performs over their next nine matches. So, keep an eye out for their fixtures with the following clubs over the next couple of months:

· Norwich City: 14th March.

· Arsenal: TBD.

· Watford: 4th April.

· Manchester City: 11th April.

· Everton: 18th April.

· Manchester United: 25th April.

· Brighton: 2nd May.

· Bournemouth: 9th May.

· Sheffield United: 17th May.

Will Southampton secure a top ten finish?

It looks unlikely that Southampton will make it into the top ten. But it is still possible. At least it seems very doubtful that Southampton will become relegated, though. The team’s good form during the middle of the season should be enough to keep them out of trouble.
