Tottenham forward Harry Kane is confident of making the European Championships this summer, which could come as a blow to Danny Ings.
Kane says that he expects to be fit for the European Championships in the summer, despite currently being out with a hamstring injury.
The forward believes he will be back playing in the Premier League in April, with Gareth Southgate then set to name his squad for the tournament.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Kane said:
In my head, I am definitely at the Euros.
Unless something pretty drastic happens between now and then, I’ll be there.
I’m still not back training with the first team, but I’m working hard in the gym, I’m getting stronger all the time.
We’re talking a few more weeks, and I’ll be playing again. I don’t want to make a prediction for which game I might be back, but I am hoping somewhere between the start and the middle of April.
These quotes from Kane could come as a blow for Southampton forward Danny Ings and his chances of making the squad. Kane being confident of making the squad takes up one more place in the forward line and lessens the chances of Ings making the cut.
Ings is up against some strong competition, with Tammy Abraham, Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all within two goals of the Saints man.
Rashford and Calvert-Lewin have both scored 14 Premier League goals, whilst Abraham is on 13 and Ings is on 15. This suggests that all four are having similar seasons in the division and that it could be a tight call for Southgate to make.
With England captain Kane taking up one spot, it will be interesting to see how many strikers Southgate adds on top of that. If, for example, he only goes with two it could be tough for Ings to make the grade. Abraham and Rashford both play for top-six clubs and have recent experience in the England squad and could represent safe options for Southgate, rather than a wildcard like Ings who has not proven himself at international level.
