Southampton have reportedly joined the race to land Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir at the end of the season.
According to Fotospor, Southampton, Marseille, Sheffield United and Everton are all interested in a deal for the Turkish shot-stopper.
The report claims that Trabzonspor want £26m for Cakir in order to let him go in the summer, with a host of clubs keen to sign him.
READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT
Whilst the Turkish international is seemingly enjoying an impressive season with Trabzonspor, Southampton already have three international goalkeepers on their books. Angus Gunn, Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster have all been called up by England throughout their careers and, as things stand, are all set to be at the club ahead of the 2020/21 season, which could make the addition of another goalkeeper tricky for Hasenhuttl.
Cakir has recorded a WhoScored rating of 6.95 in the Super Lig this season, which is higher than Gunn and McCarthy have managed in the Premier League, albeit in a different league. However, for £26m Cakir does not seem to be a huge improvement on Southampton’s current options, with McCarthy on 6.61 and Forster on 6.88 for Celtic in Europe.
This suggests that Southampton should be avoiding adding a fourth goalkeeper to their ranks, due to his price tag and the situation it could put the club in. Not only would they have four first-team goalkeepers, but they would have four international goalkeepers who could be desperate to play and that could be a tough position for Hasenhuttl to be in with regards to dealing with them individually.
