Former England defender Danny Mills has claimed that Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana still has plenty to offer amid speculation over his future.

Mills says that Lallana could still do a job in the top flight, with Leicester, Southampton and Tottenahm among the clubs reportedly interested in signing him.

Lallana’s contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season, which would make him a free agent over the summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, as transcribed by HITC, Mills said:

Because of his injury problem, he is not going to get too much football at Liverpool, and Liverpool have probably said, ‘Okay, we are going to move you on. We are going to bring in somebody else.’

But he still has a lot to offer. He was in the England squad before he got his injuries. Maybe he needs a new challenge, a fresh challenge. He is undoubtedly a quality player.

READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT

Lallana will be 32 at the end of the season and has started nine Premier League games in the last three seasons combined. This suggests that he could struggle to play regular game time and compete to the best of his abilities, given his age and injury problems.

Southampton also already have plenty of options in their two wide number 10 roles. Nathan Redmond, Stuart Armstrong, Moussa Djenepo and Sofiane Boufal are all younger than Lallana and all have contributed more Premier League goals/assists this season.

This suggests that Lallana would not be an improvement to Southampton’s team and, if anything, bringing him in could be stunting the development of some of the club’s younger attacking players.

All in all, Southampton could be better off avoiding a deal for Lallana. Instead, Ralph Hasenhuttl could look to coach his younger midfielders into improving and progressing as players, saving the club money on Lallana’s potential wages.
