Southampton eyeing up move for Wing

Southampton are reportedly interested in a summer deal to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Lewis Wing and he could be a very useful addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s midfield options.

According to TEAMtalk, Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton are all showing interest in the central midfielder, who has scored six goals in the Championship this season.

The report claims that they are all weighing up bids for Wing and that Middlesbrough could accept a sizeable offer for him.

Southampton lack depth in the central areas, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu being Hasenhuttl’s three main options. Hojbjerg and Romeu are more defensive-minded, rather than contributing with goals and assists, whilst Ward-Prowse has been more productive at the top end of the pitch.

Ward-Prowse has four goals and two assists in the Premier League, whilst Romeu and Hojbjerg have zero goals and one assist between them. This means that adding a goalscoring midfielder like Wing to the squad could bolster Hasenhuttl’s options.

Wing could offer another creative and goalscoring outlet from midfield, if he is able to bridge the gap between the Championship and the Premier League.

If Southampton had more of a goal threat from midfield, it could help increase how effective their attack is. So far this season, Southampton have relied on Danny Ings for goals, with the forward on 15 and Ward-Prowse second in the squad with just four.

This means that Southampton could improve their squad by adding more goalscorers, which Wing’s six goals from midfield this season suggests he is.
