Bryan Gunn has claimed that the decision to award a penalty against his son, Angus, in Southampton’s defeat to Tottenham was wrong.
The elder Gunn claims that it was not a penalty, but that it was also not a dive from Spurs forward Heung-Min Son.
He says that Angus made contact with the ball initially, causing Son to lose his balance and fall over afterwards. However, the referee deemed it to be a foul and VAR opted against overturning the decision.

Replays seem to back up Bryan Gunn’s comment, with Angus getting a touch to the ball with his foot before Son runs past him.
It would be easy to say that he is only commenting on the situation because his son was involved, but Bryan made over 400 career appearances as a goalkeeper and was a Scotland international – which is why he is worth listening to.
He knows what he’s talking about, having experienced these situations in his own career.
However, I will add that in real-time it was hard to notice the touch from Gunn on the ball before his hand makes contact with Son’s side, which makes the decision from the referee understandable.
It is one of those where you can see both sides of the argument, with the reasons listed above as to why the decision could be correct or incorrect.
