TalkSport pundit and former England full-back Danny Mills has defended the decision to award Tottenham a penalty against Southampton on Wednesday.
Mills says that Angus Gunn’s movement caused Heung-Min Son to fall over, despite him no making any contact with the Spurs forward, and that is why he believes it was the correct decision.
Twitter: “Gunn makes no contact with the ball.”
“Son is off balance because Gunn throws himself at him.”

Son stepped up to then score the penalty, winning Tottenham the game and securing a game against Norwich in the fifth round.

Despite Mills claiming that Gunn makes no contact with the ball, replays clearly show that he got a touch on the ball with his right foot as Son tried to poke it past him. After it deflects off his foot and spins towards goal, Son then throws himself to the floor and Gunn’s hand brushes his midriff whilst he is already falling.
It boils down to how you interpret the play, in the sense that it depends if you think Gunn’s touch on the ball beforehand is what sent Son down in the first place or if you think his subsequent brush of Son with his hand is strong enough to warrant a penalty.
It is all down to interpretation and unfortunately for Southampton, the referee and VAR deemed it to be worthy of a penalty.
