Dele Alli major doubt for Spurs ahead of Southampton clash

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli is reportedly a major doubt to face Southampton in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

According to The Daily Mail, Alli suffered an ankle injury during Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester City and could now miss the clash with Southampton.

Jose Mourinho is already without his captain and top goalscorer Harry Kane, who is currently recovering from an injury of his own.

READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT

Alli has recorded an impressive seven goals and three assists in the Premier League this season, with a WhoScored rating of 7.05. Only James Ward-Prowse, by 0.03, boasts a higher score than Alli in the Southampton squad, showing how high Alli’s standard has been.

The England international plays in the attacking midfield position and likes to make late runs into the box to score goals – rather than being an out-and-out creator for his teammates. This means that losing Alli would be a huge blow for Spurs, as they would be missing one of their top goalscorers – alongside Kane – for this clash.

It would be a boost for the Saints, as it would be one less top-class player they have to worry about defending against, thus increasing their chances of progressing through to the next round of the FA Cup, as it would weaken Tottenham’s team – due to the reasons listed above.

So, whilst it’s never nice to want to see a player injured, Southampton should be hoping that Alli sits this game out as they seek to move one step closer to Wembley.
