Southampton were defeated by an impressive Liverpool side 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday, in a game where the away side proabably deserved more on the day.
It was a resolute performance from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men in the first half, one which seemingly started to frustrate the home side, and as the half went on, it was beginning to look as if theS aints could get something out the game.
However, Liverpool came out strong in the second half, taking just minutes to take the lead through former Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. There was then a big shout for a Southampton penalty, which was waved away by the referee before Liverpool went up the other end to score and make it 1-0. Goals from Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah put the game beyond doubt.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline, quite a few Saints players put in impressive performances at Anfield, but which three stood out? Here’s our three stars from the game.
Alex McCarthy
He may have been beaten four times but English shot stopper was exceptional in parts, despite what the scoreline says. He made some vital saves, which kept the score respectable for the Saints and there wasn’t a lot he could have done for any of the goals.
James Ward-Prowse
Being played out of position is never ever easy, but Ward-Prowse adjusted well to the full back position, and showed how versatile he can be.
Jack Stephens
Despite conceding four, Stephens, much like McCarthy, saved Saints at some points, making some vital tackles and interceptions, much like he has done on a regular basis in the last few weeks.
