Bundesliga clubs RB Leipzig and FC Koln were reportedly interested in signing Southampton defender Kevin Danso during the January transfer window.
According to Bild, Leipzig and Koln were both in talks over a possible deal for Danso, but they were unable to reach an agreement with Augsburg or Southampton.
The report claims that Danso is unhappy with his game time at Southampton and was open to leaving.
READ SOUTHAMPTON VERDICT
Despite only playing six times in the Premier League so far this season, business elsewhere in the Southampton squad could mean that his game time is increased going forward. The Saints allowed both Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida to leave on loan in January, to Arsenal and Sampdoria respectively.
This means that there are gaps in Southampton’s squad depth, at fullback and at centre-back, potentially opening the door for Danso to play more minutes. Whilst he is predominantly a centre-back, he has played at left-back and right-back this season – showing off his versatility in the back four and why he could be important in the second half of the campaign.
With Cedric and Yoshida now gone, keeping Danso could prove to be a key bit of business for the Saints if he is now called upon either at fullback or centre-back. If, for example, Ryan Bertrand were to get injured in the next couple of weeks, Danso could be needed to fill his spot in the side. He is a versatile option who can operate in several positions and provides depth across the board for Ralph Hasenhuttl, which highlights why Southampton might have wanted to keep him at the club.
