Southampton could be busy in the January transfer window, with a report from Sky Sports outlining some of the areas in which their squad could be strengthened.
Following a terrible first half of the season, Saints will be looking to turn their fortunes around, with signings seemingly expected in the New Year.
Genk right-back Joakim Maehle is noted as a target for Southampton by Sky Sports, but three other positions are mentioned explicitly as areas of concern.
Hasenhuttl is keen to improve the options “right across his back-line”, and he is open to the arrival of a new centre-back – Marin Pongracic of RB Salzburg is named as a “long-term target” – and left-back.

Meanwhile, he is also claimed to be interested in bolstering his midfield, with more “power” lined up.

It sounds like all the problem positions are being targeted, but actions speak far louder than words.
Saints are in need of significant investment at the back and in the middle, but whether or not the club will support Hasenhuttl with the necessary spending remains to be seen.
Competition for places at full-back will be crucial if performance levels are to improve, while the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and James Ward-Prowse appear to have grown too comfortable in their starting berths.
January is going to be important for Southampton, and it might just need to be a busy one.
