Ryan Bertrand has been discussing his position as a role model in the Southampton squad.
The 30-year-old, who has often captained the team in recent seasons, spoke to The Daily Echo about how he aims to help his teammates remain positive in testing situations.
Southampton have been in poor form this season and find themselves in a precarious position at the foot-end of the table.
Bertrand, however, has stressed that it is important to maintain an optimistic mindset, and said:
In the hard times, it’s important to stay positive, shine a light on bad situations, to stay militant and to remain fully focused on the task at hand and encourage the boys.

It’s just normal for me to be honest. It’s a role I do and it’s the only way to do things in my eyes.

As per The Daily Echo’s report, the likes of Jack Stephens, Nathan Redmond and Michael Obafemi all look up to Bertrand and heed his advice.
It seems he is a valuable player to have around the dressing room, but it goes without saying that his performances need to improve.
Bertrand has shown glimpses of quality this season but has been largely underwhelming, much in the same vein as the past couple of campaigns.
In such a difficult period for Southampton, it will be crucial for members of the squad such as the England international to prove their worth.
