Southampton turned in a disappointing performance in their 1-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday, but one man who continued to impress was Danny Ings.
The forward may not have extended his goalscoring run to six games on the bounce, but he was clearly Saints’ best player on the night, standing out in an otherwise dismal display from the team.
Ings crashed a half-volley against the bar before hitting the post, despite being wrongly ruled offside. He also thumped home an exceptional strike from distance, but play had been stopped after a dubious foul from Moussa Djenepo in the build-up.

Read Southampton’s verdict
Ings is quite clearly Saints’ best player, and he deserves to be playing alongside far better teammates.
Without his goals and exceptional performances up front, it is hard to imagine just how far adrift Southampton would be as we approach the halfway stage of the season.
Keeping hold of Ings, regardless of whether the club are in the Premier League or Championship, could be difficult in the summer.
