Southampton fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the road at Newcastle, in a game which they lead 1-0.
It was a great chance to push on for Saints, who were enjoying some good form of late, but their defensive frailties struck again as they let a one-goal lead slip against Steve Bruce’s side.
It was a cagey first half, with few clear cut chances, but Southampton seemed to edge the play in the first 45, with Nathan Redmond missing two good chances to give the Saints the lead.
The visitors carried this momentum into the second half, and this payed off when an in-form Danny Ings scored, making it five consecutive games with a goal for the striker.
The lead was short lived however, when Jonjo Shelvey met Andy Carroll’s cross to pull Newcastle level. Newcastle continued to press for the winner, before defender Fredrico Fernandez capitalised on a spilled shot to win the game for the home side.
The Three Stars
Danny Ings – This man turned out to be key for his side once again, scoring the Saints’ only goal. He continues to perform excellently, week in week out.

Sofiane Boufal – Was very good when he came off the bench, and caused problems during his time on the pitch. Is it time for the Moroccan to get a starting chance?

Shane Long – It was another good performance from Long, who was heavily involved in most attacks. He was a handful for the Newcastle defenders.
