Centre-back Virgil van Dijk left Southampton in January 2018 to join Liverpool in a £75m deal.
The Dutch international has thrived since moving to Anfield, reaching successive UEFA Champions League finals and winning personal awards.

The defender is also a favourite to win France Football’s Ballon d’Or award ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.
Before moving to Liverpool, Manchester City were also interested in Van Dijk but decided not to formally pursue a deal. Sherwood feels they should have. As quoted on the Daily Star, he said:

I think Jurgen Klopp obviously did a great job on Van Dijk when he was at Southampton.

When looking back at it, City must regret not making a stronger move for Van Dijk because he is arguably the man who has increased Liverpool’s title credentials.
The centre-back has hardly put a foot wrong since moving to Merseyside and with City’s defensive injury woes at the moment, Pep Guardiola will be cursing his luck.
One thing is for definite, the Saints benefitted the most but have failed to adequately invest the money received for him.
