Saints bowed out of the Carabao Cup in the round of 16 following their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
City’s class shone through in a game which they dominated for large parts. Saints were given few attempts in front of goal and had little possession against the Premier League Champions.
It didn’t take long for City to break the deadlock, with Nicolas Otamendi heading in before a Sergio Aguero brace made it 3-0 just before the hour mark.

Jack Stephens scored a solid header late on, which was only a consolation goal for the Saints.
In a game that saw Southampton be unable to play their football, it was a relatively solid performance, and there were some good individual performances on the night.
The Three Stars
Jack Stephens – The only scorer for Saints, he did well defensively, and was pretty good in all aspects. He will definitely be considered ahead of this weekend’s game.

Alex McCarthy – Another good performance for McCarthy between the sticks. He made some great saves and kept the score respectable at times. He should definitely feature this weekend, especially considering Angus Gunn’s poor form of late.
Sofiane Boufal – In a game which didn’t suit his playing style, he still managed to cause problems and tested Claudio Bravo. He will most probably make a return to the side this weekend.
