Saints fell just short at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, much to the frustration of both the players, manager, and the fans.
Southampton started slowly, allowing Tottenham to have time on the ball, and enjoy much of the possession in the early stages. Spurs took advantage of this just before the half hour mark, with Ndombele slotting home to give Spurs the lead.
However, celebrations were short lived for Spurs, as Serge Aurier was shown red after two bookable offences, which left Saints with a great chance to get back into the game. They did when Ings capitalised on Lloris’ bizarre error, and Ings tapped it in to get Hasenhuttl’s men back level.
But once again, Spurs scored. Kane fired home just before half time to restore Tottenham’s lead, after sloppy defending from Saints.
With Southampton having the numerical advantage, they began to chase the equaliser in the second half, where Saints dominated possession, and had many chances, but never capitalised on any of these.
Despite the result disappointing, it was relatively good performance from Saints, and I’ll be looking at three players whose performances stood out yesterday.
The three stars
Danny Ings – Another great performance on Ings, scoring Saints’ only goal. His work ethic on the pitch was impeccable, and he is showing why Hasenhuttl needs to start him.

Oriol Romeu – A key part of the midfield yesterday, Romeu was solid and made some important defensive tackles. Was, as always a good performance from Romeu.

Nathan Redmond – Another good performance from Redmond. Was lively all game and caused many problems for the Tottenham defence. Also, linked up well with Danny Ings at time.
