Saints ran out 1-0 winners in today’s Premier League clash with newly promoted side Sheffield United, and it’s now two consecutive wins on the road for Southampton.
The game was very open, but both teams lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Both sides had chances, with Moussa Djenepo scoring the winner. Both teams defended resolutely, until Djenepo’s brilliance broke the deadlock.
The Blades continued to pressure Saints, but the defence held on and managed to keep a clean sheet.
There was some controversy surrounding VAR once again, with Oli McBurnie’s opener being ruled out and multiple penalty shouts were cancelled out by VAR. There was further unrest from the Sheffield United fans when Billy Sharp was shown red after a nasty tackle on Stuart Armstrong.
There were many good performances out there today, but there were three standout performers on the pitch, and I feel that they deserve some recognition.
The Three Stars

Moussa Djenepo – The obvious option here, was lively the whole match and showcased great skill and determination. He also scored what turned to be the the winner, slotting home after a great solo run. I’m expecting to see much more of Djenepo’s excellence this season

Che Adams – This was an encouraging performance from Adams. Although he didn’t get his name on the score sheet, he was very unlucky not be, hitting the post and forcing a great save from Henderson. He showed that he knows where the goal is, and is starting to adjust to the Premier League. A goal for Che is not far away.

Angus Gunn – Gunn did his job excellently today, and showed just how important he is to this Southampton side, keeping his team in the game and the lead, and pulled off some great saves to help Saints seal their second win of the season.
