With Cedric starting at right-back against Manchester United last Saturday over Yan Valery, should this be a regular theme going forward?
Not only is Cedric more experienced at right-back, but he is also arguably more sensible in his defending and decision-making. He didn’t show his best form last weekend, but fans know just what the Portugal international can bring to the team if his previous performances for the club in recent seasons are to go by.
Cedric, who joined the club in 2015 from Sporting CP, impressed in his first few campaigns before his form dipped.
He was dropped for breakthrough star Valery when Hasenhuttl took charge, though. The 27-year-old was then sent out on loan to Inter Milan before making his return, perhaps in surprising circumstances to the team in the summer.
Cedric is a versatile full-back and can play on either side. He possesses good attacking ability, and although his defending isn’t the best, he is still solid enough. He is also an adept crosser and has created numerous chances that haven’t been taken in seasons gone by.

Furthermore, he does like to take the odd free-kick and did score a wonderful set-piece goal against Manchester United in the 2-2 draw at St Mary’s last season.
Valery is the better defender of the two and does well in the attacking phase, too, however. The Frenchman has performed excellently since breaking into the team and continues to put in good performances. In fact, he is most probably Hasenhuttl’s preferred option at right-back, judging by history.
We could potentially see both in the same side. Cedric can play at left-back, indicating that he could be a viable replacement for Ryan Bertrand. It could possibly weaken the defence slightly, but it may be a good move for Hasenhuttl, especially with the attacking qualities both full-backs possess.
Overall, although Cedric and Valery in the same side is an unlikely choice, the former will undoubtedly provide Hasenhuttl with food for thought as competition for places at right-back intensifies.
