Jannik Vestergaard is keen to keep scoring for Southampton after opening his account against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Denmark international marked his 30th game in Saints colours with his first-ever goal for the club, as he rose above Victor Lindelof to score the equalising goal in a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

Speaking to The Daily Echo, Vestergaard discussed the possibility of him getting his name on the scoresheet a little more frequently.

He said:

It was very nice. It’s been a long time and I am happy to finally get a goal. It’s not only something I wish I could do, but it’s also something I need to do.

It’s something I have done in my career, so it’s been very disappointing so far. I should have more chances in dangerous areas.

But I can take the positives from scoring against Manchester United and, hopefully, I can take the confidence from it. It gives me the feeling that I know how to do it again and maybe that will give me the extra per cent when I get into the box.

The focus obviously has to be on keeping the goals out at the other end of the pitch, given Vestergaard’s struggles since arriving at St Mary’s…

However, as he is among the tallest players in the Premier League, it would be nice to see him score a few more goals from set-pieces, as he did against United at the weekend.

In his final two seasons in the Bundesliga before making the switch to Southampton, Vestergaard found the back of the net on seven occasions for Borussia Monchengladbach.

We have been rather profligate in front of goal when it comes to scoring from set-pieces in previous seasons despite the always-excellent deliveries from James Ward-Prowse, but we do have players who can capitalise on the balls into the box.

Hopefully, this is the first of many for Vestergaard in a Southampton shirt.
