The South Coast was thrown into a frenzy on Wednesday night when Southampton and bitter rivals Portsmouth were drawn to face each other in the Carabao Cup.
Portsmouth negotiated a tricky tie against QPR to advance from the second round, winning 2-0 at Loftus Road. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men laboured over a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage to beat Fulham.
These sides and their respective fans have been itching to face each other, but they have endured polar opposite fortunes in recent years.
Southampton were on their way to the Premier League during the previous meetings, both of which ended in draws, while Portsmouth were in trouble and spiralling down to the depths of League Two.
That last meeting ended in a 2-2 draw, with Billy Sharp’s late goal being cancelled out by a David Norris strike deep into injury time.
Here we look at the Southampton side that was fielded that day, to see where they are now.
