Nathan Redmond was forced off with an ankle injury in Southampton’s 1-0 win over Fulham on Tuesday night, and images from The Athletic’s Carl Anka after the game depict him walking with the help of a protective boot.

Redmond had to leave the pitch during the second half after appearing to twist his left ankle following a shot towards Marek Rodak’s goal.
The 25-year-old got the assist for Southampton’s decisive goal as he slid in Michael Obafemi – another who hobbled off, this time with a hamstring injury – for his first of the season.

It’s standard protocol to immediately ensure that no further damage can be done to an injury, but the photos hardly look good. Such was the extent of Redmond’s pain at Fulham, he was unable to make his way towards the travelling fans at the end of the game to thank them for their support, which is definitely unlike him.
Injuries that are inflicted not by an opponent’s challenge but from an awkward landing or twist always come as a big concern, especially when a player of Redmond’s importance is on the receiving end.
He has developed a reputation now for being a readily available, consistent player for Saints. Redmond rarely gets injured, and given his influence and esteem in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans, we can only hope that this one isn’t as bad as it looked…
