Southampton icon Le Tissier thinks defensive shake-up could help next season

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier thinks that his former club need to strengthen their left-back position in order to improve the team ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Le Tissier claims he doesn’t think that left-back Ryan Bertrand is playing like he was when he first joined Southampton and thinks bosses should possibly start looking for a replacement.

I think the last couple of seasons Ryan hasn’t been as dynamic as he was in the first seasons he was here.

He also went on to say that he doesn’t think that Matt Targett is a permanent replacement for Bertrand.

I think Matt has struggled a little bit if I’m honest in that position. I’m not sure if he is a long-term replacement for Ryan in that left-back role.

However, Targett is still only 23-years-old and Le Tissier thinks that perhaps he could be one for the future.

He might kick on again because he is still young and still has improvement in him.

Southampton have struggled in the Premier League for the past couple of season and have been fighting against relegation.

This year, when Ralph Hasenhuttl took over from Mark Hughes, he managed to keep them fighting and helped secure their position in the Premier League for next season.

However, a shake around in defence could help the Saints push on further as they look to improve next season.
