Southampton remain just five points clear of the relegation zone after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
Two quick-fire goals from Ayoze Perez in the first half gave the Magpies a 2-0 lead, before substitute Mario Lemina gave Saints hope with a fine finish on the hour mark.
Perez completed his hat-trick with four minutes remaining, however, to condemn Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side to defeat.
