TV pundit Garth Crooks believes Nathan Redmond should receive a “thank you” from Moussa Sissoko after the pair clashed as Southampton came back from a goal down to claim a shock 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Harry Kane gave Spurs the lead in the first-half but Jan Valery and James Ward-Prowse both scored for the second consecutive game in the final 15 minutes to steer Southampton out of the relegation zone.
In the closing stages, Redmond was unhappy with a frustrated Sissoko following a poor challenge and pushed him in the back, leading to a confrontation where the latter looked to press his head onto his opponent.
Speaking on Final Score, Crooks claimed the Spurs man was lucky not to be red carded and praised Redmond for not reacting unprofessionally:
I think he is a very lucky boy. All credit to Nathan Redmond, he doesn’t go to ground. He doesn’t make a meal of it. Sissoko definitely puts his head in Redmond’s face. He is very lucky to stay on. But Redmond does him a favour. I think Sissoko needs to say after the game ‘thank you’ because it could have been a completely different situation for him.
The Saints are now two points clear of the drop zone after Cardiff City also won on Saturday, whilst Spurs are now winless in four league games.
Two points isn’t a lot, but with James Ward-Prowse in the form he’s in and talented starlets like Yan Valery continuing to come through the academy, you’ve got to fancy Southampton’s chances of survival.
