Jan Bednarek has revealed his mindset ahead of facing Harry Kane when Southampton host Tottenham Hotspur at St. Mary’s this afternoon.
Kane returned for Spurs after a lengthy injury lay-off last weekend in a 2-1 defeat at Burnley but looked sharp and Bednarek, along with his defensive partners, are set to have their work cut out for them.
Speaking to the Southampton Daily Echo, the 22-year-old insisted he’s focusing on his own game, rather than focusing on the tricky afternoon Kane should provide.
I don’t think you have to focus on the fact that you are playing Harry Kane because that’s not the right way. You have to focus on how to be the best you can and to find solutions to how you can take him out of the game. I don’t think too much about who I face, I think more about how I can stop him and that’s the main thing. We will focus on our own team and our shape.
Former Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino won’t be on the sideline for the visitors following a two-game suspension and £10,000 fine issued by the FA for his actions towards referee Mike Dean after full-time at Turf Moor.
This may give Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side a boost to get a huge win, but a draw would be enough to ensure the Saints stay above Cardiff in 17th and outside of the relegation zone going into the international break.
Southampton are without a game in three weeks after today, so will they go out with a bang?
