The Premier League this season has been very competitive with historical top teams sitting pretty at the top of the table as two-thirds of the season is behind them.
The title race is far from over as Manchester City, the reigning champions playing well in hopes of retaining their winning run. Liverpool is also as close to owning the top spot to claim the title and reclaim the club’s legacy.
Tottenham is currently in third place and will look to continue their fine run.
Manchester United has picked up the pieces to come back from their early season poor form and powered by their new coach have climbed up to fourth spot.
Arsenal at 5th position will find it difficult to end at the top by any means but will push forth to finish in the top 4 this year.
How Does it Look at the Bottom?
Each year, while some teams vie for the top spot, some want to avoid relegation. For this year, Southampton is facing down that road.
The picture at the bottom of the table though is strikingly different. With Huddersfield having a torrid season with only 2 wins in 27 matches so far, they are facing inevitable relegation, placed in last position currently with only 11 points.
Not very different is Fulham currently in 19th place with a meagre 17 points again facing a possible relegation.
The team that finishes in the 18th position will be the third team to be relegated from the Premier League.
Currently, there are four teams that will most definitely have to fight their way out of finishing in the bottom three. Southampton at 18th position with 24 points, Cardiff at 17th with 25 points, Brighton at 16th with 27 points and Newcastle in 15th place with 28 points. Each of these teams will look to perform well in the remaining fixtures to avoid a relegation this season.
Southampton has had a mixed season as their best wins of the season came from home fixtures against Everton and Arsenal and their away win against Leicester City. They also managed to draw with biggies Chelsea and Manchester United.
Southampton’s best players this season have been striker Danny Ings with 7 goals in the Premier League so far, their midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and centre back Jannik Vestergaard. While the season began with Mark Hughes as Southampton’s manager, their poor form saw Kelvin Davis and later Ralph Hasenhuttl taking over the reins.
With 12 matches remaining, they will be looking to recover from their dismal run to win the four matches scheduled against other relegation contenders.
They will also need to up their game and play to the best of their abilities in their fixtures against four of the current top six teams. An upset would earn them the confidence to avoid relegation and to earn maximum points in their remaining matches.
Though the table might indicate that they stand a real chance to be relegated, it is however quite unlikely that they will be.
