Southampton take on Everton in the Carabao Cup tomorrow night at Goodison Park in the third round stage.
The Saints reached this part of the competition thanks to a late 1-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium in the previous round.
Against the Seagulls, Hughes made 10 changes and it’s likely to be similar again tomorrow night.
Mark Hughes has a number of possibilities in this game as he looks to find a winning formula.
Some players can really play themselves into his thoughts if they are able to put in strong performances, with the first team really struggling in the Premier League.
Over the last few weeks, Hughes has stuck to a similar pool of players for his selection, meaning that numerous players who play tomorrow night are likely to have been short of minutes.
So, take a look at four players who we feel should be given the opportunity to play in the Carabao Cup clash.
Sam Gallagher
After being denied a loan move away from the club during the summer, Gallagher has been used sparingly and has been limited to just one bench appearance, which came in the previous round.
He deserves the chance to shine given Saints’ attacking shortcomings lately.
James Ward-Prowse
Much like Gallagher, Ward-Prowse has found it tough to gain opportunities.
He wasn’t even on the bench at the weekend against Wolves, which suggests he is set to earn a rare start in this one.
It’s a great opportunity for the academy graduate to press his claims on a regular start after being neglected for much of the campaign.
Maya Yoshida
The treatment of Yoshida has been surprising after having such a strong World Cup with Japan.
He has been limited to just one start this season, and many feel that it’s now time for him to become a regular starter in the Premier League.
Tuesday night offers him the perfect chance to show his worth to the side and put pressure on Mark Hughes going into next weekend.
Matt Targett
Targett has made only two starts this season after being denied a switch to Fulham.
This will also provide the perfect opportunity to give Ryan Bertrand a rest after playing 90 minutes in every match so far this term.
With Targett unlikely to dislodge Bertrand from the side, this provides the young defender with a chance to impress Hughes.
