Southampton manager Mark Hughes has hailed the progress of defender Jan Bednarek, and believes he is ready to perform on the biggest stage at this summer’s World Cup.
Bednarek made it into the Polish squad, after a fairly late arrival on the Premier League scene, but was an asset in Southampton’s survival bid nonetheless.
A goal on his top-flight debut against Chelsea saw him earn a stint in the first team for the club’s last few games of the season, which led to some very resilient performances, enough to get him noticed by Poland manager Adam Nawalka.

Hughes said: “We’re really pleased for him and I think it’s recognition for how well he did when he came in. He did that under difficult circumstances because we’d lost Jack Stephens to suspension”.
He went on: “If he’s asked to play a role for his country then I’m sure he’ll do exactly what he did for us, and that’s play well”.
Poland kick-off their World Cup campaign against Senegal on the 19th June, and Bednarek may well feature in his nation’s tournament opener.
