The Welshman decided to sign a short-term deal at St Mary’s in March with the aims of keeping the club in the Premier League and because of his success, he was offered an extended deal at the club.
Hughes played for Southampton 52 times between 1998 and 2000 and is now staying on as their fourth manager in two years. The 54-year-old kept the Saints up and also managed to get them into the FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to Chelsea.

In his initial period at the club, he won two games, drew one and lost four, but it was still enough to solve the problems that ex-manager Mauricio Pellegrino had got them into before being sacked by the club.
The former Stoke boss lost his first three league games in charge but gained eight points from the next four to all but secure their Premier League status.
Hughes will be hoping to strengthen his squad in his first transfer window at the club when it opens on Thursday.
