Former Southampton defender and England international Wayne Bridge has said it would be ‘ridiculous’ if the Saints fail to avoid the drop this season, given the level of quality within their squad.
Southampton have risen from despair and financial instability in recent years from League One back to the Premier League, where they have laid down the framework to build as an established top flight club.
However, this season the club have slipped to a precarious position under Mauricio Pellegrino, and now Mark Hughes has inherited a side that are teetering on the brink of a return to the Championship.
Having beaten Bournemouth in the New Forest Derby last weekend, Saints fans have been offered renewed hope, but they still have a lot to do with their future not in their hands, should Swansea, West Ham and Huddersfield pick up positive results.
Ahead of tomorrow evening’s trip to Goodison Park to face Everton, youth academy graduate Wayne Bridge has weighed in on what he believes is an unbelievable season for the club.
Talking to the Press Association, as reported by ESPN, Bridge said;
The lads put in a performance and got my hopes up that we’ll be getting out of trouble, to be honest.
From what I have seen, it’s just been a bit disappointing.I don’t think the lads have shown as much quality as what they have got because there’s some quality players.
The most disappointing thing is I don’t think there’s been enough fight in the team, considering the position that we’re in. You need to fight a lot when you’re down there.
So, the quality players that Southampton have got, to see them go down would be ridiculous.
