Mark Hughes confirms that Southampton have no fresh injury concerns, claiming that having squad flexibility and ‘resources’ could help the club in the end-of-season run-in.
Southampton face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium this weekend in an FA Cup semi-final tie, and Hughes believes a good performance against the Blues could help build some much needed momentum.
The Saints are winless in the Premier League in eight games, last winning against West Brom in early February. Currently sitting in 18th place in the table, four points from safety, Saints will be hoping to pick up some momentum this weekend.
Hughes accepted that some changes are possible for the South Coast club’s second fixture against the Blues in a week. Talking to the club’s official website, Hughes said;
We can freshen up our group, which to be honest we probably need to. If we do that and I see something that might help us going forward then we’ll have taken something from the game ahead of Bournemouth.
(Leicester) was a difficult game for us and we need to make sure that the physicality and athleticism is there against the top teams. We won’t be making radical changes, but we need to use our resources in the best way we can.
As far as I’m aware, we’re okay fitness-wise. There was nothing significant told to me after Leicester but we’ll get the full picture after training.
We are trying to build some momentum and an FA Cup semi-final could be good for us with that in mind.
Southampton certainly have the tools to ensure their safety, and with Bournemouth, Everton and Swansea to come in their final four league games, survival is possible.
